TREE PRUNING

Tree pruning promotes healthy growth, therefore maintaining the overall health and strength of trees. However, it also regulates the size and shape to improve aesthetic qualities of the tree, making pruning a vital part of caring for your trees.

Tree pruning is even great for trees recently planted. By removing potential defects such as co-dominant leaders and intersection branches, proper pruning can encourage formations of great branch structure as well as canopy shape in its later life, therefore heavily reducing the risk of any major physical weakness. This type of tree pruning is called Formative Pruning.

The three main pruning terms are Crown Thinning, Crown Lifting and Crown Reduction. Other terms include Veteran Pruning.

crown thinning

Crown thinning is used to reduce the leaf area and therefore weight of the tree canopy by a specified percentage. This creates an even canopy of foliage on a balanced and sound branch framework to avoid stem failure. In accordance with BS 3998 the percentage of material to be removed will not exceed 30% so as not to alter the leaf comportment structure.
